ON THIS DAY
Maria Agnesi’s Birthday
16 May 1718
18th century mathematician
First female university mathematics professor.
Born in Milan on the 16th of May, Maria Gaetana Agnesi was the eldest of eleven children. At just nine years old, she composed a speech, in Latin, championing a woman’s right to an education. By her eleventh birthday, she was fluent in seven languages and was given the name the “Seven-Tongued Orator”. Today, we acknowledge her contributions to the fields of mathematics and philosophy, perhaps best known for her development of the cubic curve, known today as the theory Bell Curve.
